Questions about
AQA Chemistry tutoring

A few practical answers before you get in touch.

How much is tutoring, and what is included?

Tuition is £200 per hour. This includes the weekly one to one lesson, my normal help between lessons, the resources I prepare and share, and access to my online Chemistry practice platform.

I deliberately limit the number of regular students I work with so I have time for this as well as the weekly lessons.

Do you set homework?

Yes. I normally use targeted exam questions or short pieces of work that expose the bits we still need to fix.

Tell me what school has already set so we can make sensible use of your study time. We can go through anything difficult in the next lesson.

Can you help if I’m struggling badly?

Yes, provided you are prepared to work between sessions too. We can go back over the earlier chemistry that is making the current material difficult.

Recent public reviews include students who began from low grades and later made very large improvements.

What sort of results have your students had?

In 2025 all of my AQA tutees improved from their starting grade. My AQA resit students achieved A or A* and improved by two grades.

The reviews and full cohort results give more detail.

Do you tutor resit students?

Yes. We start by working out what went wrong the first time: missing knowledge, weak exam technique, poor revision habits, difficult circumstances, or some mixture of them.

Why do you specialise in A-level Chemistry?

It is the subject I know in depth. I have a PhD in organic chemistry and more than 20 years’ experience teaching the A-level course.

I spend my time keeping up with the specifications, exam questions and common problems in A-level Chemistry.

Do you also tutor OCR A?

Yes. I also tutor OCR A. I keep separate question sets and exam-board detail for the two specifications.

Can I send questions between lessons?

Yes. Send me the question and your working where possible, so I can see where you are stuck. I can often give you enough of a nudge to keep moving without waiting until the next lesson.

My normal between-lesson support is included in the fee.

How does online tutoring work?

We talk on Google Meet and use a shared Miro board. We can both write on an exam question, work through a calculation or draw a mechanism.

I can bring in extra questions and mark schemes while we work. The online lessons page explains the setup in more detail.

Do I need a tablet or stylus?

I strongly recommend one. Being able to write on the shared board makes a substantial difference for calculations, mechanisms and longer written answers.

A second screen can help, but it is optional. Ask me about what you already have before buying equipment.

Do you help with study skills or university applications?

Yes, where it fits my experience. We often work on revision planning, exam technique and how to use study time efficiently as well as the Chemistry itself.

I can also help with UCAS or personal-statement work and some entrance-exam preparation. Chemistry tutoring remains the main service.

Can you tutor me in person in Nottingham?

Online tuition is my normal service, including for local students. Face-to-face tuition may occasionally be available by special arrangement.

Please ask about availability and the fee separately; the advertised £200 hourly rate is for online tutoring.

Do you have any availability?

My regular timetable for 2026–27 was fully booked by mid August.

Students who can be flexible about lesson times may still be able to use cancellation slots, and I keep a waiting list for regular places that become available.

I am now taking enquiries for around ten regular places for 2027–28, starting from June 2027.

Check the current availability page, which I update when something changes.
